Im looking for opinions to confirm my bias.

Polished and clear coated legs? or painted? And if painted...what color? Not going to black/blue it (Oxide). Too expensive and messy.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Thoughts?

I’d lean towards leaving them bare/clear coated.

If you want to blue them, you can do it easy and cheaply with a kit designed for firearm blueing .

It’s way easier than going with the heat with a torch, then coat in oil method.

Cool!

I would do an irregular brushed finish and then clear coat it. Just remember, the clear could chip as chairs and things band into the legs.

That would cover exactly a/100th of my needs. Too spendy.  I debated the idea for a while but decided against it.

Po.    Polished and clear coat or as is and clear coat would be my vote..

Makes sense, just thought I’d throw in my experience blueing

One of those 3 ounce bottles I’ve used to reblue an entire 28" shotgun and used like 1/4 of the bottle. Wouldn’t think it would take more than 4 or 5 bottles to do those legs.

Polished and cleared. IMO its a much more high end look.

But for the love for your wife, they get painted flat black.

Seriously tho, the steel furniture my wife used to make got cleaned, sanded and waxed. That’s all they did and it holds up pretty well.

Polished and clear coat then.. :-)

Flat black. The top is too old school for the more modern look of polished and cleared.

I like it, but that could be the hours of polishing talking.

I thought about waxing, seems like it would need more maintenance though, right?

If it’s outside a lot it will eventually rust, but that’s part of the patina. Indoors it won’t rust.

it will be exclusively outdoors, getting hit by sprinklers most of the time

Yeah if your woodwork was that smooth it would all look cohesive.

One unusual option would be to match the esthetic of the top by letting the legs rust and then clear coating them.

Flat black. Easy and hides the imperfections.

do a textured grey or something else dark.

That or clearcoat.

It will rust right under the clear coat if you don’t do anything other than polish and clear it.

Kinja'd!!!

That's a little corner shelf in my bathroom. I didn't go nuts with the polishing, I just knocked off the mill scale.

I’d paint the legs , especially since it’ll be outdoors (since you can touch up anywhere it might try to rust). Black or a dark grey would look good I think.
